Recreational Therapy

What is Recreational Therapy?

Recreational Therapy is a systematic process that utilizes recreation and other activity-based interventions to address the assessed needs of individuals with illnesses and/or disabling conditions, as a means to psychological and physical health, recovery and well-being.

The purpose of the RT process is to improve or maintain physical, cognitive, social, emotional and spiritual functioning in order to facilitate full participation in life. Services are provided or directly supervised by a “Certified Therapeutic Recreation Specialist” (CTRS).

What will this look like at Olympia Therapy?

We are excited to share about our newest team member, Sarah Stochel. Sarah obtained her Certified Therapeutic Recreation Specialist (CTRS) in 2018 after graduating from the Therapeutic Recreation program at Western Washington University in 2017. Sarah will be taking on her own clients this March as well as leading weekly recreation therapy groups. Sarah’s favorite recreation therapy modality is the “Flourishing Through Leisure" (Anderson & Heyne, 2012), which is a strength-based approach to well-being that aims to create inclusive leisure experiences and help participants develop resources and skills.
